Kids get to rock out at the new Small Green Rock Academy this summer, being held at the gorgeous fiberflame in Saugerties NY. Grammy Nominee Tracy Bonham & Award wining kids/family recording artist Bari Koral will treat children to an awesome new experience as we sing, dance, move, and play with lots of great music from these beloved artists. Children will learn the basic & fundamentals of music, be hands on with instruments, learn new rhythms, play in new genres, and move and explore through creative movement & kids yoga activities. This camp rocks!

Grammy nominated alternative rock musician Tracy Bonham's debut album went gold and she has worked with Aerosmith, Wayfaring Strangers, and Jimmy Page and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin. She is a classically trained violinist and pianist and has been teaching music to children for 8 years.

Dubbed the “‘IT girl’ in kids/family music” by NY Magazine and the “Sheryl Crow for kids” by the NY Post, Bari Koral is a beloved recording artist and music, movement and kids yoga educator. Her albums have been named top kids albums of the year by publications such as People Magazine, iTunes and Time Out Kids. Bari Koral is also the host of Yogapalooza, the first kids yoga, music and movement television show, airing nationally on the world’s largest health & wellness television network, Z Living. Her songs, known for their pacing and appeal to children, have become part of educational curriculums world-wide.

Summer Workshop Series

Brendon Small Metal Workshop with Special Guest Scott Ian

July 6-10, 10am-2:30

Ages 12 - 18, Some Experience Required
Cost: $600 / $550 for enrolled PGRA students

Brendon Small, creator of Metalocalypse and Home Movies, as well as the voice and guitar of the legendary metal band and cultural phenomenon DETHKLOK, comes to our town to teach our children the finer points of HEAVY METAL. Students will be placed into their own bands and then educated in what goes into making true metal music: from naming one’s band, to writing songs, arranging the material, performance of said material, the importance of shredding for shredding’s sake and talking to girls after the show. The camp concludes with 2 performances: The first is for family and friends at the close of the last day of camp (2pm, July 10), the second is an opening slot for the Rock Academy show band at BSP in Kingston that night.

Brendon is creator and show runner for the Adult Swim series Metalocalypse. He makes all the music for the show and the Dethklok albums. He also created the show Home Movies in addition to his career as a stand up comedian and numerous other projects.

Scott Ian is the co-founder and rhythm guitar player of Anthrax. Scott, with Anthrax helped create thrash metal in the early 80's.

Tracy Bonham String Camp

Cost: $450 / $400 for enrolled PGRA students

Tracy, along with assistant Tom Benton, will create a string ensemble that performs works from acts such as Arcade Fire, Portland Cello Project, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, Devo and the Talking Heads. All stringed instruments welcome.

Grammy nominated, classically trained, alternative rock musician tracy bonham has played violin with the likes of jimmy page and robert plant, jay z, aerosmith, blue man group, among other acclaimed national acts. She has developed a rock-strings program in Woodstock, Brooklyn, and Eugene, OR where she teaches kids and adults the art of playing, and arranging for, classical strings in a rock setting.

Bad Brains Recording Camp with Darryl Jenifer

July 20 - 24, 10am-2:30pm

Ages 11 - 18, Some experience required.
Cost: $450 / $400 for enrolled PGRA students

Darryl will work with the kids to construct their own songs, showing them grooves and different approaches, then take them through the recording process. Students will leave with a CD at the end of the week.

Darryl Jenifer is the bassist for the the legendary Bad Brains and for the rap-rock group The White Mandingos. The Bad Brains are widely regarded as one of punk’s most innovative and important bands.

Songwriting Camp with Michael Bernier

July 27 - 31, 10am-2:30pm

Ages 8 - 18, Beginners Welcome
Cost: $450 / $400 for enrolled PGRA students

Michael will plumb the murky depths of where songs come from, how to decide which ideas to put to music, how to arrange, where to put harmonies, when and how to finger-tap and so much more. There will be a concert at 2:00pm on Friday to show off the kids’ compositions.

Multi-instrumentalist Michael Bernier has performed internationally as the front-man of the highly acclaimed Stick Men, as well as with Eddie Jobson, Marco Minneman, Greg Howe, Natalie merchant, Sonny Rollins and Simon Phillips. He is currently working as a solo artist and as part of the Bernier-DeCarlo duo.

Bad Brains Jam Camp with Dr Know!

Aug 3 - 7, 10am-2:30pm

Ages 11 - 18, Some experience required.
Cost: $450 / $400 for enrolled PGRA students

Dr Know will take your child through the art of the jam and song creation, showing them how to blend sounds and grooves for maximum effect on the students’ own original compositions. There will be a concert on Friday at 2:00pm for the parents.

Dr Know is the guitarist for Bad Brains as well as performing with Mos Def’s Black Jack Johnson. The Bad Brains are widely regarded as one of punk rock’s most innovative and important bands.

Percussion Camp with Jason Bowman feat. Special Guest Ed Mann from Zappa’s Band

Aug 10 - 14, 10am-2:30pm

Ages 8 - 18, Beginners Welcome
Cost: $450 / $400 for enrolled PGRA students

Jason will teach students the art of percussion and how to incorporate dynamics, power and speed into their playing. Students will spend the week learning selected percussion ensembles with a concert at 2pm on Friday for the parents. Special guest Ed Mann will come in for 2 days to offer his legendary expertise and insight to students.

Jason has been working as a professional musician, producer and teacher for over 30 years.

Ed Mann is best known for his mallet percussion performances with Frank Zappa’s ensemble from 1977 to 1988 and appears on over 30 of Zappa’s albums. He is also a bandleader and composer in his own right.

Theory in Action! Paul will mix classes in Modal Theory, Chord Progression Structures, Rhythmic Ideas, Odd Time Signatures and Dynamics with long jam sessions. You will come out of this camp being WAY better at improvisation then when you started…or else!

Vocal Camp with Maria Todaro

Aug 24 - 28, 10am-2:30pm

Ages 10 - 18, Beginners Welcome
Cost: $450 / $400 for enrolled PGRA students

Learn how to sing better in groups! Maria will teach the basics and some subtleties of vocal technique to render ALL musical styles accessible. The week will end with a concert for the parents at PGRA.

Maria Todaro is renowned for her virtuosity in the florid works of Rossini, Handel, Purcell, Vivaldi and Mozart. She is co-founder and Executive Director of The Phoenecia International Festival of the Voice and also an accomplished pianist, conductor, librettist, actress and teacher.

A week-long immersion into playing in a rock band, participants will experience hands-on instruction in being a member of a group. We will listen to and watch some of the most influential groups. A final performance under the tent will be the week’s goal. Campers will produce a professionally recorded CD of the material they have learned during camp!

This session is open to guitarists, drummers, bass or keyboard players, and any other instrumentalist interested in playing rock music.

Peter Dougan has been playing guitar for over 20 years and teaching for more than 15. He attended Ithaca College and received a degree in Jazz Performance. Peter then went on to receive a Masters Degree from Berklee College of Music and The Boston Conservatory. Along the way, he has performed with many groups in styles from Funk to Afro Cuban to Blues and Roots Rock.
